10 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Lock In Your Wedding Date
Your wedding date is the first thing in the entire planning process, it determines your venue availability, your vendor availability, your season, and even your photo light. Before you lock it in, here are the questions worth sitting with.
1. What season actually matches your vision?
Lush and green, or warm and golden? Houston's spring and fall offer the most forgiving weather and light for outdoor portraits — summer brings heat and harsh midday sun, winter is mild but daylight hours are shorter.
2. Does the date conflict with major holidays or events?
Check for holiday weekends, local festivals, and major sporting events that could affect hotel availability and guest travel.
3. Is it a popular date that books vendors fast?
Saturdays in October and November are some of the most requested dates of the year in Houston, if your heart is set on a fall Saturday, start locking in vendors as early as possible.
4. What time will the sun set?
If golden-hour portraits matter to you, check sunset time for your exact date before finalizing your ceremony time. In November, the sun sets noticeably earlier than in July and that changes your whole reception timeline.
5. Are your must-have vendors available?
Before you pay a venue deposit, check availability with your top photographer, florist, and caterer. A gorgeous venue on a date when your dream photographer is already booked is a hard trade-off to make later.
6. How far out are you booking?
Popular Houston photographers, including us, often book 9–14 months in advance for fall Saturdays. If you're dreaming of a specific date next fall, this is the season to start locking things in.
"The date you choose isn't just a logistics decision — it's the lighting, the season, and the mood of every single photo in your gallery. It's worth getting right."
7. Does the date allow enough planning runway?
A shorter engagement means a faster moving vendor search. Make sure your date gives you realistic time to book everyone you want.
8. What's the weather historically like?
Houston fall and early winter are generally mild and dry but always have a rain contingency, regardless of season.
9. Will your most important guests be able to attend?
Check with immediate family and your wedding party before finalizing, especially if anyone needs to travel internationally.
10. Does the date feel meaningful to you?
Some couples love an anniversary of their first date; others prefer a completely fresh date. There's no wrong answer, just make sure it's intentional, not just "whatever was available."
